Makkah to Madinah: Every Transport Option Compared (Taxi, Haramain Train, Bus)

6 min read

Comparing the Haramain High-Speed Train, private taxi and bus for the 450 km journey between Makkah and Madinah — costs, comfort and which is best for your group.

The three main options

The distance from Makkah to Madinah is roughly 450 km along Highway 15. Your three realistic choices are the Haramain High-Speed Train (about 2h 15m), a private taxi or SUV (about 4h 30m door to door), and the SAPTCO bus (about 6h). Each has trade-offs.

Private taxi — best for families and pilgrims with luggage

A private car picks you up from your hotel in Makkah and drops you at your hotel in Madinah. No changing platforms, no lifting luggage, and you can stop for prayer, food or rest whenever you want. Rates from around SAR 700 for a sedan and SAR 900 for an SUV.

Haramain train — fast but rigid

The train is fast and comfortable, but you still need transport from your Makkah hotel to Makkah Rusaifah station, and from Madinah station to your hotel. For solo travellers with light luggage it is excellent; for families with children and multiple suitcases the total time and hassle often match a private car.

When a private taxi wins clearly

Late-night or early-morning arrivals, groups of 4+, elderly pilgrims, families with young children, and anyone bringing Zamzam water and gifts. You also gain the option to stop at ziyarat sites en route if you plan ahead.
